Baby MayLan

Portrait in Oils - Step Five and Finished!

I will be giving this portrait to May Lan's mom on Sunday, so I can't really post this until Monday afternoon!

In Step Five and Finished I worked on details.  I finished up baby's eyes, hair, skin and added more shadow details to her dress.  I touched up the field of flowers a bit, too.  You many notice that the face contains a lot of detail and the rest of the painting is in an (unfocused) Impressionistic style.  Many artist use this technique to cause the viewer to focus on the most important part of the art work.  Such a cute baby!

Pastel Painting - Beautiful Ladies

Very beautiful lady and the way she is tilting her head to the side.  A new view to draw from  I am stepping out of my comfort zone with this.  I usually just do front/straight ahead portraits.

Contemporary Art Works by Theresa - Morning Girl at The Bedside

Morning Girl at The Bedside
(After Edvard Munch)

Medium:  Watercolor and Graphite Pencil

All paintings done after one of the Great Masters is done only for my own personal growth.

Edvard Munch is best known as being a Norwegian born, Expressionist painter.  Edvard's mother died while Edvard was quite young, and he was raised by his father.  Edvard's father suffered of mental illness and this played a role int he way he and his siblings were raised.  Their father raised them impounding fears of hell, and other deep seated issues, which is part of the reason why (most) of the work of Edvard Munch took a deeper tone.

Edvard Munch's most famous painting is "The Scream."  Most of his work does showcase emotion more often than not.  Which is why, when I found this painting it was hard for me to believe he was the artist.

Contemporary Art Works: The Sybil of Delphi

Portrait
The Sybil of Delphi (after Michelangelo, c. 1509)

Medium:  Pastel Pencils

Portraits done after the Great Masters are done for my learning experience only.

The Sybil of Delphi is unrolling a parchment scroll (not drawn here) and apparently turning towards the crowd to read it (I chose to only capture that in my work).  Michelangelo's work is a Fresco that hangs in the Sistine Chapel in The Vatican.  I had the awesome opportunity to visit The Sistine Chapel and viewed this painting for myself in May of this year.  I can tell you first hand that it is beyond amazing!

Art Work: The Girl With A Pearl Earring

Portrait - The Girl With A Pearl Earring (after Vermeer, c. 1665)

Medium:  Soft Pastels

Portraits done after the Great Masters are done for my learning experience only.

It is possible that this painting by Vermeer is a portrait, in which the subject sat for Vermeer.  The girl is wearing an exotic turban, and the way she is gazing at us dreamily over her shoulder copies a style of portrait which was introduced by Titian's "Ariosto".  This girl is seen against a neutral, dark background, very nearly black, which establishes a powerful three-dimensionality of effect - a process recommended by Leonardo da Vinci.

Art Work: Portrait of Drew Barrymore

Taking a portrait class at Houston Art and Design School.  We had to start with a movie star so that when we were critiqued we wouldn't take the 'suggestions' too personally.  I'm not sure that worked!!!  Ha ha.  In any case, here is mine, which will be posted on the school's web page!  Totally cool!  It's Drew Barrymore.  Let me know what you think.

Medium:  Prisma pencils, and red glitter glue for the hearts!

I have discovered that I enjoy fantasy and whimsical art!  So of course, it goes without saying that my next project was something fun!  I registered for an 9 week Prisma Color pencil course at Rice University, and am studying under Katheryn Klauber who is very well known in Houston for her portrait work.

My chosen portrait . . .  a Magick Bunny!   This project was so much fun!  This picture was taken from a gift box that I received from my daughter Heather on my last birthday! (Original artist is unknown).

The Artist Within Studio: Mozart

My next project is a prized possession in more ways than one!  I love the art work but more than that I love the model!  Completed early January 2011.
