Art Share 2019 #3 . . . .Focus!

Art Share

"Almost everyone I've ever met would be well-served by spending more time thinking about what to focus on.  It is much more important to work on the right thing than it is to work many hours.  Most people waste most of their time on stuff that doesn't matter.  Once you have figured out what to do, be unstoppable about getting your small handful of priorities accomplished quickly.  I have yet to meet a slow-moving peron who is very successful."  - Sam Altman, in his book, "How to Be Successful."

I read this in a fellow artist's newsletter ("Focus is a Force Multiplier" by Clint Watson) and he says that he can't shake the feeling that this is an extremely important idea for us artists to internalize and practice.

The most important thing we can do as artists is to focus on our artwork!  Focus on producing it, on improving it, on mastering our craft.  It's critical for us artists to design our lives in such a way that maximizes our studio time!

Go make art!

Can I hear an amen!

Art Share 2019 #2. . . .for all my Artist friends!

Art Share for all my Artist friends!

I  read a lot!  I read all the art books I can get my hands on!  I also watch videos and movies about art and artist's.  So this is what I learned last year and have just now realized I should share this gem!

The Old Master's (and I think I would be safe saying we all love their work) always always kept an art inventory.  WHAAAAAT?

It's super simple!

1.  Find yourself a notebook of some sort (Dollar Store notebooks work well) that you can dedicate only to your art inventory.

2.  Label it so that you do not unintentionally use it for something else.

3.  Label the top line of your pages with information that you feel is important for your inventory records.  Ideas:

Title
Year
Medium
Size
Price
Posted Online?  Where
Comments

(this is my title page)

4.  Start to record all your art that you hold near and dear to your heart.  Not the pieces that are saved just for progress sake or even the pieces that ended up in your recylce bin!  Just the work you either (1) are in your own private collection (stuff you would NEVER EVER sell) and 2.  the work that is for sale.

5.  I also and this is probably over the top - but I make Shutterfly books for each year.  These books contain every piece of art I have made whether I trash it or sell it.  This is a wonderful way to look back over the years and see your own progression as an artist.  And they are also will leave a wonderful legacy!

Still Life #6

A Most Challenging Still Life Assignment

This homework assignment was very challenging for me.

When I first started doing art in 2010 I started with graphite pencil and would work in a realistic style with details and blending pencil (color pencil as well).  In 2014 I started playing with watercolors.  In 2017 or so I started with acrylics.  Continuing to try to get everything as realistic as I could with as many details as possible, as most beginner painters do.  I have read and heard that detail painting and over blending is one of the most common issues in beginner paintings.

As I continued to paint (since 2010 I have almost 1,000 drawings, sketches, and paintings to date).  With my painting,  I have learned from many well known Houston artists, to paint with a fully loaded brush and with a more painterly style.  I also learned that our followers; our viewers, do not initially look at our paintings up close but rather from 12 - 18 feet away - so it begs the question:  why would you paint as if your viewers only see your paintings up close?

When you step back away from your painting, all your lovely brushwork will optically blend together dispite your painting looking like a beautiful mess of color up close.

This also explains one reason why so many painters choose to use long handled brushes.  When the brush is held correctly (close to the end), the long handle provides the artist with some distance from their canvas.  We must also remember to continually step back from our painting to view it and determine where and how to place their next fully loaded paint brush stroke!

This was my most challenging assignment to date.  Critique will be tomorrow . . . .  just waiting to hear my professors comments!  Critiques from professionals are a wonderful tool to help us all become better painters.  We should try to look at our own work with a more critical eye.

With that said . . . . .

Figure Drawing from Live Model

Figure Drawing From a Live Model

Trying to better my skills at Figure Drawing, or as some may call it Life Drawing.  I am enrolled in an 8 week class at the Art League of Houston.  Each week we have a live male or female nude model.  The picture below is of a young woman.  I hope and believe (otherwise I wouldn't post it) that this work of art is not offensive to anyone.  If it is, please email me and I will remove this post.

This drawing/sketch was a 15 minute pose done in charcoal and conte pencil.

This is not for sale.  Just a recording on my blog to show progression.

Hope you enjoy.

Its not a perfect camera shot but I did not think it needed to be.
