Art Share 2019 #1 - Cleaning your EXPENSIVE brushes!

As artists, we can all appreciate the cost of good, professional art supplies.

Brushes are among the top expense when thinking of what my art $$$ buy.

I have always been an advocate of buying the best one can afford.  I have always believed that we are only as good as our tools.  I believe that in the kitchen also, when I prepare a small intimate meal to share with my husband, or when preparing a feast for family or friends.

We are only as good as our tools.
We need to take care of our tools.
Paint brushes are the tools of our trade!

Because of that we must take care of those tools.  This blog will share with you how I clean my brushes after the paint (in this case oil) has been wiped cleaned of the brush with either paper towels or rags, then cleaned in odorless thinner or mineral spirits.  Once this is done - the brushes are ready for their final cleaning step.  Now, I will say up front, many artist don't believe in taking this last step.  I, on the other hand, am an advocate of more cleaning . . .!

So friends - clean your expensive brushes well!

I have been using this particular clearner for a few years now, and love it.  I also use it to clean brushes I've used for watercolors and acrylics.  I am now using it to clean my oil paint brushs!  YAY!  I buy it on line or my local art store.  I LOVE this soap cleaner!  It foams and bubbles up making me feel like my brushes are getting a deep clean!  This is also a Preserver (conditioner) it is very kind and good for your brushes!

You can see from the above two photos, all the soap suds I can get with just a little swish around the container.  (Yes, I always wear a mask and gloves when working with my art).  I added this magnifyer mirror so that I can see the brush bristles really well and make sure the paint is toally removed. (It's an Ott Lite that can be purchased at a craft store or art store).  I clamped it onto one of my shelfs here in my laundry room.  It is on a flexible stem so that I can move it around. It also has a light - the extra light really helps.  Sometimes I use it on my easel as well.

I am really fortunate that my husband built shelves and put a sink in our laundry room so I do not ever have to be concerned with the mess I may make - staining the sink with paint - or other things that are of concern to artists when cleaning up.

Whether or not you have a designated place to clean your valuable brushes doesn't really matter.  What matters, and the purpose of this post is to share with you the importance of cleaning your brushes completely.

Happy Painting!

Work In Progress . . . .

Still a long way to go but want
to share my first sitting of teaching myself to
oil paint.

This is wet on wet painting.  Hopefully it has dried some over night so that I can
add some color today.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The background is a gesso black and white wash prepared last week.  (See earlier post).  I did a contour drawing of what I wanted to paint with a white charcoal pencil.  It did help me to keep the black and red colors from blending into one another.  I have lots of ideas for this painting and only hope I can get them down on this canvas the way my brain is seeing them!

About an Artist

I.  AM.   AN.   ARTIST.

I found this on a website and it just hit home with me.

If YOU too are an artist it will also resonate with you!
Enjoy.

Preparation for oil paintings . . .

One Black
One White
and
One Black and White

First, I paint a thin layer of Gesso, straight from the bottle, onto my canvas boards.

One black - 8 x 10 canvas board

One white - 16 x 20 canvas board

One black and white - 16 x 20 canvas panel board (This mixture of gesso was spread with quick, spontaneous strokes around the canvas with a painting spatula).

It is my intention to use the black and white one as the start of a really cool abstract that I have in my head and in my sketch book . . . . . . only time will tell.   Now to just wait for them to cure - which Liquidtex recommends 24 hours.

I prepared these on my kitchen counter because my painting table was such a mess!  Love that!  I first layed  down a canvas painting drop cloth - I would hate to destroy my kitchen counters!  I have not yet made a decision if i will paint the sides of the canvas boards - that is why they look unfinished at this point in time.

I am working with charcoal and charcoal generates a lot of dust that
becomes airborne (like chalk pastels), so I take protective measures.  You

Its just who I am . . . .

    Happy New Year 2019!

I am not the same woman that I was at the beginning of 2018.  My Spirit continues to evolve and shift.  My values and priorities change.  My passions multiply and divide.  There's no telling how many things I will start and stop in 2019.  How many triumphs and failures I will experience.  How many blissful moments along with devastation I will feel.  But one thing is for sure . . .  I will never stop being curious.  I will never stop trying to learn and explore.  I will stay true to my path and support others on theirs.  I will do my best to not harm others and not back down when challenged.  I will continue to nourish my mind, my body, and my Spirit.  My experience has been . . . that as long as I do these things. . .  I am sure to lead a life rich in meaning and substance that makes me feel grateful and alive.

The Story of Her (My) Life

I watched it - it was wonderful!  I was in my late teens (very late teens!) she was someone I truly enjoyed.

The story of Gilda Radner's Life.

(I don't usually do this but CNN is doing a special on Gilda on New Year's Eve 2019)

but . . . . . I want to share this with you!

I love this.
I read it on a friend's Face Book post.

I decided to share it with y'all. (You. Lucky. Readers.)!

Story of my life!
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.

- Gilda Radner

"Something"
An Exhibit by Francesca Fuchs
2018 Texas Artist of the Year

Francescas Fuchs works in acrylics on canvas board.  Fuchs says, "I work the old-fashioned way. I make little paintings, like 10 by 13 inches, and then make cartoon drawings from them. I change the drawing till I'm happy with it, make stencils and trace them onto the large canvas or the wall, then paint it."

Fuchs is an instructor at the Glassell School of Art in Houston.

Gallery Trek #2

The Jung Center
5200 Montrose Blvd.
Houston, TX

In my visit to The Jung Center, I saw Kristen Cliburn’s exhibit.  Her canvases are visual distillations of the natural world. Cliburn states,  "she views the work as allusions to the physical world through the subtle isolation of color and light”.  Her paintings can be positively transformative, calling on the viewer to stop, be still and contemplate.

Art Share . . . The Belle Epoque era of the art scene

The Belle Époque was an era of peace and plenty between wars

The French expression Belle Époque was used in retrospect after the horrors of World War One—a term of nostalgia for a simpler time of peace, prosperity, and progress.

Art Gallery Trekking - 2018

Gallery Trek #1

"Off The Wall Gallery"
610 West Loop, The Galleria, Houston, Texas

At "Off The Wall Gallery" you will find original works of art from the Impressionaist and Belle Epoque periods, as well as contemporary impressionist works.

I went to see some of the original art work of Malcolm Liepke whose work is unabashed, confident and human.  Narrative figurative paintings are his thing.  I'm hoping they become my thing!  His paint is thick, and the brush stokes are often visable and wide-set. Oil is his chosen medium.  Bold brushstrokes, rich buttery surfaces and most importantly, the timeless humanity of his classically inspired imagery have yielded him tremendous success around the world!

Enjoy.

Art Share #3

Art Share #3

Art is an idea that belongs to everyone.  It is found in ever culture.  Whatever physical form it might take, whatever emotional, aesthetic, or psychological challenge it may offer, it is vital to every culture's sense of itself.

Lessons learned in pursuit of art are lessons that pertain to almost everything we experience.  Art is not separate from life; it is the very description of the lives we lead.  (101 Things to Learn in Art School).

What is aesthetics?  Strickly speaking, aesthetics is not the same thing as the philosphy of art.  Aesthetics is a much broader term, not just referring to created artwork but to matter of taste in general.  The word encompasses any sort of sensory perception.

In short, the the study of aesthetics, as we understand it today, is concerned with how our judgements of taste relate to our language, our minds, and our surroundings.

Think about the Mona Lisa.  It is probably the most famous painting in the world.  Is it your favorite painting?  Why is it so famous?  Why is it work so much?  If you saw it for the first time today and had never heard of it, would you find it beautiful?  Instead of blindly accepting the standards and traditions of our culture, a little philosphizing will challenge us to justify our beliefs about beauty and the arts!  (Daily Book of Art, pg 9).
